Welcome Wagon

This is me enjoying poetry.
Hello, poetry lovers. Yes, if you are in ENG 265, you are a poetry lover. If you don't love poetry yet, you will by the end of the semester. Even if by the end of the semester you still do not like poetry, simply pretend that you do. Humor me.

The writing here is a little less formal than those explications and paragraphs you have to write on Blackboard. Even so, remember to use proper Standard English language in your comments. Until the next assignment, happy poetry reading!

  1. Hello, Everyone
Can't say I am a poetry lover because often I just don't get it. I like words and creativity. I hope to walk away with an appreciation and respect for others opinions and a little more knowledge of the time an era of the poets.

    1. Yvonne, if you like words and creativity, then you like poetry. You just haven't found the right poem yet.

  2. Hello All,

I like poetry only when I understand it and I can relate to. Recently, I was recently introduced to Spoken Word Poetry, and, my desire to enjoy poetry was rekindled. I hope this class opens my eyes to poems in ways I would't have imagined.

  3. I'm excited to take this class, because I like to interpret words. I really enjoy Edgar Allen Poe, and I see that we are reading a bit of his work, so I'm happy. I hope I find some other poets that I enjoy as well.

  6. Hello,
I hope to learn some great new poets and solid collections (thanks for the list!). I hope to learn new styles of poetry too and if I can improve my own informal free-flows. I love to find poems that the words come off the page and grab you with intrigue, understanding or anticipation. While some poems lull a bit, my Eng101 prof once said "Great poetry is as hard as a diamond."

  7. Hello Everyone,
I hope to read some awesome poems in here, I like lyric poems, I love to read and look for them, I love poems with deep meaning and emotion. I do not like poems that rhyme but hey that's just me, most of them that I read do not, but there are some that are just as good. In my ENG 101 class my teacher had us reading some poems as well. She had us think and try to understand the meaning of them. I'm excited about class and being able to read a bunch of them.

  9. So far I am enjoying the class even when I feel like pulling out my hair with the proper writing. Reading all the post from week to week has really made me think and I love it.!!!

  10. This course is amazing thus far. I have no prior knowledge of poetry and this course is helping to change my perspective on that. One thing that poetry really helps you with you is determining a sentences' true meaning.

  11. New York Poetry is very fast paced and exciting like the city it's named after. There is an abstact fearlessness to the wording. I found a few difficult to understand because they seemed to have no direction and many didn't have a complete thought. I like writing, but lately I have been overwhelmed with being proper. I thought this class was going to be about self expression and art and boy was I wrong. This has been my biggest challenge in my academic career thus far. I read the article Poetry as Evolutionary Fitness and I felt insulted. If anyone reads this check out the article by Charles Webb. He says that one must be intelligent to write and understand poetry.

  12. Hey
It's me again I was letting out my fustration earlier. I love words and often wonder why some people make it so complicated. I like to laugh and enjoy what I read, I even enjoy playing detective to put together the pieces of the puzzle which presents a challenge. What I have enjoyed most about this class is the responses and post from my class mates you guys have such amazing insight I love it. Often I feel my creativity is smothered because I am concerned about punctuation and grammar just to write a sentence. My ideas are trapped behind periods and quotation marks.

  14. Rise ans shine bright as the sun. I woke up this morning with an image of the Sardine painting that was posted I jumped up went in the kitchen and took out a can and opened it. I saw it the Sardines in the painting. There is a shimmer of a rainbow on the Sardines and the can is packed like the painting.
How many of you guys graduate in May? I do and I am not planning to attend the graduation. My children are slowly persuading me too. I image the place being packed like Sardines that's an expression I grew up hearing and saying. I have been on the Dean's list the last 3 semesters and I am trying to hold on but i am exhausted. I raised my children not to give up so now I am trying to follow my own advice. I like this blog I feel free. I am looking forward to reading what you guys post.

  15. For what I hope to accomplish in this course is to be able to read all sorts of poetry. Sure, everyone can do that but for me, to feel is to read. To be engaged is to feel and experiencing such a feeling is what makes art amazing.
When others have listened to music, they have feelings arise. Emotions surface such as happiness, sadness, fearful and to fearless. I have seen many people walk in the city with a huge smile on their face with headphones in their ears and it makes me wonder exactly what it is that they are listening to but whatever it is, their emotion is showing wonderful colors.
For the aspect of poetry, I want to read a piece that has me in tears. Not in the worst of ways but one that literally has me go "Oh my god......" and then leave me speechless.

    Until then, the search continues

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a poem is worth a million ideas

  16. This class has really made me appreciate poetry. The poetry that I had experienced in the past wasn't my cup of tea and some of these poems aren't my favorite either, but many of them are very interesting and pretty awesome. I hope in the next few weeks we have more poems that I enjoy and can relate to. Some of these poets really bring it home to me and I appreciate that.

  17. I wasn't sure how I was going to like this class, and I had a hard time acclimating to the online class. I wasn't sure how everything worked, and I wasn't pushing myself and double checking on things, but now that I've gotten used to things, and made myself more accountable, I really am enjoying the class. I especially liked explicating the Cinderella poem, and think that really looking at poems deeper has given me an appreciation of them. I'm enjoying this class a lot now and hope over the next few discussions I can go deeper into their meanings.

  18. Hello Everyone,
In this class I expect to read poetry that can be interpreted in many different ways. I like to explore what the writer is trying to say to his readers. After taking this course I hope to have a better understanding of the different forms of poetry.

  19. I am amazed what I've learned so far in this class. Originally, I was under the impression this class would explore different types of poetry but with it I've also had the opportunity to learn about the poets and the era they influenced.

  20. I am a person that loves music, I feel it is what feelings sound like. I took this course because I wanted to read writers thoughts and feelings on paper. I am very interested in what people have to say, and I enjoy trying to understand what people have to say.

  21. After reading the bio of Jorie Graham I began to question genetics, inspiration and influence. Being the child of two artist it's no wonder she was artistic. I find her name captivating it makes me want to know more, she was very accomplished as a woman, writer and person.
