Fantastic Ekphrastic

John Coltrane plays jazz. Jazz is cool. John Coltrane is cool.

That perhaps makes Harper cool, too. Harper's poems, like several poems from previous weeks as well as many, many, many poems in existence, are influenced by music.

Art influences art quite often. Graham uses visual art as an inspiration for her writing. Klimt was part of the art nouveau movement, which rebelled against traditionalist styles. His most famous painting is probably "The Kiss." Graham uses words instead of paint to convey similar ideas that the visual artist have.

  1. Hello, Everyone
i woke up this morning feeling inspired and full of life. Although I am struggling in this class I am happy that I took it. My mind has been broaden by the poems, but more importantly by your post. I read Jorie Graham's bio and 3 words stuck out to me Constructor of experience. So now I ask is that the foundation of poetry to offer the reader an experience.

  2. The painting of the kiss and the forest visually take me to the same place the color, contrast and setting seem identical. I can see the glitter.

  3. Hello classmates
How is everyone doing? I think its cool that poetry contains a method to display a person's opinion through the use of figurative language instead of the plain critiques that we all see around, which is what ekphrastic poetry is. I enjoy reading someone else's criticism on a topic after i come up with my some analysis.

  6. I prefer the Ekphrastic painting over the poems, Although the poetry is very descriptive much was left to the imagination and interpretation. I have never been a person interested or intrigued by art but the kiss touched my soul will hold that vision of a lifetime.

  7. I think Ekphrastic poetry allows an individual to really grasp the idea of another art form. Whether it is music, art, dance, etc, it puts words into what a person may be feeling which allows it to be discussed more, and those discussions open up opportunities for people. That could be opportunities for meeting new people, intellectual opportunities, or even romantic ones. Either way, I think it opens up new ways to look at an art piece entirely.

Your statement is so true, much of what we enjoy musically are songs we can relate to or identify with and many just have a beat, or sound that most us emotionally or visually. I like to believe that all art is inspired by something.

  8. Ekphrastic poetry is beautiful. It allows a poet to reference more than one thing, to incorporate his/her thoughts or feelings about a painting, or about music that moves them from within. This type of poetry opens the artistic door for writers to be even more creative.

    1. Karin,
I totally agree. I took a peek at the surrealist and imaginist and there are many similarities in the creative ,descriptive and motivational process.

  9. Ekphrastic poetry is what I see preferable to many artist as it allows such creative freedom but within a visual reference. Sure, many poems would have the creative freedom from just about anything though when a visual becomes mutual to the reader, as well as the artist, such a connection can be made from the artist to the poet, and the poet to the reader. This just opens the door to many readers who would prefer to be able to understand, not necessarily comprehend, the poem; for poetry shouldn't be easily comprehensible but more so have the ability to take you on a emotional journey.

  10. Hello Everyone,
I love Ekphrastic poetry! As a reader it allows you to interpret art through different forms. It enables you to see art through different lenses. It ties all art forms together. When I was younger I was in an art program and while analyzing Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh my instructor played the song Starry Starry Night by Don Mclean. Everytime I see the painting I recite the song.

  11. Hello everyone,
Exphrastic poetry is something that I am learning
about for the first time. I find it very interesting and
it has helped give me a different perspective on the
meaning of artwork. To read an interpretation or view
of someone else certainly can change the whole aspect
of how I may have been interpreting art. As I start to learn more about poetry through the weeks I have been in this class, it has been enlightening after learning about Ekphrastic poetry. I like to interpret first and then read the poet's interpretation and see what the differences are. Ekphrastic poetry can certainly
make a person look at poetry in a different way.

  12. Hi everybody,
I think that Ekphrastic poetry is a great way for different types of art to compliment other forms of art. Ekphrastic poetry allows for paintings to speak and to be heard in a different light. Art can be viewed in many ways with Ekphrastic poetry. I like Ekphrastic poetry because it allows me to look at poems and paintings in a different way, which allows us to think with a more open mind and to interpret things different ways.

  13. Hi Guys,
I think Ekphrastic poetry is a great way to be able to express how something visual makes you feel. When looking at something or watching something or even someone, we have thoughts, and we want to express these feelings and emotions, we write what we feel, just like an aritist paints or draws. Ekphrastic poetry is proclamation for a form of art in any way.
